Spurs Educate Heat on Finer Points of Winning

This is how it’s done, Miami.

When you have a 24 point lead, you don’t lay back and just try to run out the clock. You push harder.

This is the lesson the Heat must learn after trying to find something positive to grab on to after this blowout loss. The Heat suffered its worst loss of the season, 125-95 – a 30 point embarrassment – to the team with the best record in the NBA. Most may be reluctant to claim the Spurs to be the best in the league, but after last night’s impressive win that may begin to change.

The Spurs have been able to tinker with their roster a bit and add more athleticism. At first, the Spurs tried to get to the Heat early by running at them hard and fast. Seeing as the Heat may be a bit demoralized after losing to the Magic and blowing their 24 point lead, and being on the end of a back to back, the Spurs tried to give the Heat a taste of their own medicine – and were successful. The Heat never could bridge the gap.

For the Heat, it is their 2nd loss in as many nights and will certainly draw more scrutiny from the media which is unbalanced in its view of this team. Win a game -  you’re supposed to win and beat inferior teams. Lose a game, and there’s a crisis that needs to be resolved. Yet, this is the identity of this team now – when you had the draw of free agents the Heat had this past summer, it comes with the territory. Say what you will, this team understands that and will not crack under the pressure. That is one of the great intangibles of this team – they expect the boos, and in a way thrive on it. Can they continue to be even-keeled when the losses mount? That is really what this current stretch is about.

So, they have 2 losses in this tough ten game stretch. Going 5-5 may satiate the doubters, but most likely not. Nor should it, this team was built for one reason and that is to hoist hardware. The Heat also know this. But like every champion in this league, there has to be an educational process. Erik Spoelstra keeps reiterating this over and over and to be fair, there is a learning curve for him, too, as he is only in his 2nd season at the helm of this team. Although this is a talented roster, there are few in this league that can say they have ever coached in a situation like this, too.

Should there be reservations about the Heat’s progress? Yes. Should expectation be tailored? No. So, what should be taken from this 30 point blowout loss? A template on how to win. Analyze this game, study it. Print it out and carry it around in a binder and make notes. The Heat should examine this because it is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. Face it, the Heat play lazy basketball for long stretches. The Spurs showed them that you can’t against any opponent. Even on nights when you are taking on the bottom feeders, you have to stick to your game plan and work so that you can perfect it. That way, when you get into matches against the big boys. you are executing because it is second nature. The Heat haven’t gotten there yet. Frankly, how could they? This team is still brand new and trying to work out the kinks.

What’s scary is, the Heat know this. They understand that this isn’t going to come together overnight. They may look confident and perhaps even arrogant. And maybe, just maybe, they didn’t believe that it would be this hard. Until now.

Heat Silence Jazz; Adversity on Road Good Team Builder?

The Heat brought a shhh to the Jazz faithful with the final score of 111-98 Wednesday night in Salt Lake City. It was a great test for this Heat team, sporting a 5 game win streak in front of a lively crowd that rooted deeply for their hometown heroes. Not quite to the level we saw with the Heat in Cleveland last week but pretty close. There was also something else familiar when comparing this game to the Cavs game – the booing of Lebron James.

Now, obviously Cleveland has found a reason to boo – I still contend that although I empathize with the fans, there really isn’t a logical reason to boo Lebron. He left town. Get over it. This has and will happen over and over again. Root for the front of the jersey, not the back. (Yes, I would be booing Wade for leaving, too, but I would move on and root for my Heat. Again, why I empathize.)

But Utah? Salt Lake City? Huh? Why should you boo? What possible reason do you have?

That said, this provides a tremendous opportunity for this team to gel and grow. The offense still isn’t anywhere near it needs to be. The substitutions and rotations are not quite set in stone. Guys are still trying to figure out where they are comfortable on the floor and where they like the ball. The defense, at times, looks terrible. But the adversity this team faces every night on the road, ah, a coach’s dream.

There is no better time for this team to be on the road and the winning helps fix everything. Instead of the cannibalism that was trying to be depicted by the outside/national media, the Heat are quietly going about their business and tailoring wins. A players-only meeting against the Mavericks is no longer a punchline, but a battle cry. The Heat are winning and when faced with boos raining down from the crowd, they rally around each other and fight for wins.

Is that a bit too poetic? You bet. But, that is what this team needs to believe at this point. It needs to find an identity, and thrive with it. Play the outsider/villains whom no one wants to see succeed except the home crowd. That adversity bubbling in your gut will only make you stronger and more focused. For this Heat team, they will never be the underdog and they can’t use that as their crutch. Instead, they are going to be the villains, the team which came together with a touch of arrogance and naivete which fans in other arenas want to see fail. This is what the Heat are in for, and this win over Utah shows that they are game.

The Triumvirate is Born: Lebron James is Coming to Miami

Wow. What a media spectacle but in the end, Pat Riley and Dwyane Wade got it done. Lebron James announces on ESPN that he is in fact joining the Miami Heat. Wow, wow, wow. Never again will a team see this kind of talent cultivated on one team in one off-season.

Tonight, Miami are the witnesses. Poor Cleveland. Think back to 1997 when the Marlins took the Indians to 7 games to take the World Series title from them. It will be a post-apocalyptic nightmare for basketball there.

This is something that cannot be put into perspective. There is no precedent for this. The Heat were able to pull of an amazing coup that has been in the works for about 4 years now. Pat Riley has to be regarded now as one of the greatest executives that ever lived.

Heat fans, prepare to be the villains of the NBA. Oh, and watch the bandwagon swell.

Is Miami Lebright or Lebrong? Lebron James Might Be Next For Miami Heat

Right now, with the Heat being reported to net Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, there is still one last move to make this offseason a complete dream and a coup. That would be to get Lebron James to come down here and play in sunny South Florida.

There are reports that the Heat are the front runners for the Lebron sweepstakes. Remember, there haven’t been any contracts signed yet, so in theory all three players could not only sign for the current $16.6M max, but they may even opt to take a bit less so that they can sign more players to round out the roster. The other thing to keep fixed on is the actually numbers for the 2010-2011 salary cap which if they come in a bit higher, might be even more favorable for Miami.
