Heat Loses to Pistons in Preseason Opener

Miami, FL

The Miami Heat kicked off a massive rebuild campaign for the 2008-2009 season against their rivals, the Detroit Pistons. As little as three years ago, this was a big rivalry as both teams were vying for an appearance in the Finals. If this game was any indication of how close the Heat are, well, they are pretty dang close.

The Heat lost to the Pistons in OT, 95-91.

It was a game of firsts for the Heat: number two pick Michael Beasley flew in his family to watch his exhibition debut. Beasley did not disappoint – against a proven frontcourt Beasley had 16 points in 21 minutes and 6 rebounds.

It was the official debut of the Erik Spoelstra era: well, maybe the unofficial official debut. And he kicked it off with a surprise – Dwyane Wade at point forward, which worked very successfully (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 turnovers in 22 minutes).

For the Pistons, Rodney Stuckey scored a game high 23 points on 8-15 shooting.

The Heat had injuries: Chris Quinn left in the 4th tweaking his left ankle; Shaun Livingston, Dorell Wright, James Jones, and Udonis Haslem all sat out.

The Heat’s next preseason game will be on Thursday against New Jersey – in Paris, France.

About jonnylons

Self-proclaimed #1 Heat fan. Founded MiamiHeatwave.com back in 2004 when I couldn't follow the Heat living in Tallahassee. Found lots of fellow "Heatians" online and it has never been the same since. Loving this new Heat team with the Triumvirate. Pat Riley has always been, and will now forever be, my idol.
