Mario Chalmers Fined 20K
For his recent mis-doings at an NBA rookie orientation, Mario Chalmers was fined $20,000. Not a bad situation to be in since as recently as the end of March he was a hero on Kansas’ national championship team. Traded to the Heat as part of a draft day deal, Chalmers has worked his way up on the Heat’s depth chart at point guard and could be challenging to start for the Heat in its 2008-2009 campaign.
Mario Chalmers Burnout?
Mario Chalmers seems to have made a mistake early on here in his NBA career. The question is, will he do it again? Is this going to be the defining moment of his early career or will he use it to focus more on becoming a professional?
Pat Riley, inducted into the hall of fame officially yesterday, seems to think that Chalmers is a high quality guy that just made a mistake. Wrong place, wrong time.
This seems to be the safe approach. Chalmers is on the cusp of creating a very good opportunity for himself by coming into camp with the Heat and being surrounded with a bit of a buzz: but let’s make sure this is the right kind of buzz. He is a defensive-minded point guard with a long wing span that can shoot the three. He could be a very nice complementary piece for gold medalist Dwyane Wade as he looks to launch his NBA redemption this season. But getting kicked out of a rookie orientation program is not a good way to start things off.
Mario – get it right. Don’t blow it. Literally.
Heat Add Jamal Magloire
The depth for the Heat at center was a pressing issue. The Heat entered the offseason with only Mark Blount, Joel Anthony, and rookie David Padgett under contract. There was speculation that Alonzo Mourning would return and this does seem to be true, but not until 2009 most likely.
And now, the Heat are taking a chance on one-time all star, Jamal Magloire.
The Heat reached agreement yesterday with the NBA veteran who is also the team’s second Canadian on the roster along with Anthony. Yet, since his 2004 NBA All-Star season, Magloire has been falling off the radar. The Heat are taking a chance on Magloire, but it isn’t too much of a risk – they signed him to the veteran minimum and although details are not known yet, it doesn’t seem like a guaranteed deal. Which means the incentive for Magloire is to get into camp and get into shape and make an impression immediately. This could be a good thing for the Heat.
Then again if it fails, it means very little to the Heat. It does seem that DJ Mbenga was not willing to go for the veteran minimum and that was the main criteria for the Heat in securing a big man.
