NBA Free Agency Underway

July 2, 2008 · Filed Under Offseason, Rumors

Free agency for the NBA officially began at 12:01am July 2nd. Yet, players cannot sign contracts until the moratorium is lifted on July 9th.

(By the way, ever wondered where the word moratorium comes from? Well, it’s from Latin. The Latin word for a delay is mora while someone who delays something is a morator. Hey, I teach Latin, so why not tie it in to basketball?)

Expect to hear a lot of rumors swirling as things begin to take shape. It seems that options are already being taken off the table:

  • Baron Davis is going to sign with the LA Clippers and that means Elton Brand will stay there as well. Yet, the odd man out of Los Angeles’ other team could be Corey Maggette as the Clippers won’t have enough room for both.
  • Beno Udrih is about to ink a 5 year deal with the Sacramento Kings.
  • Gilbert Arenas is reportedly going to be offered a 6 year deal worth well over $100M by the Washington Wizards. Why, I have no idea. Antawn Jamison is going to be about $60M richer, too. Needs to correct the spelling of his name for starters.

Just remember, nothing you hear is official until July 9th.
