Heat Draft Day Scenarios

A Heat Fan’s Survival Guide to the 2008 NBA Draft

Be HEARD! Join us in our forum to discuss the NBA Draft!

Rumors, scenarios, reports, updates – all pure speculation until David Stern announces the Heat’s pick tonight at about 7:40pm. So, what should we be watching out for? Well, let’s focus on the first pick for the Heat at the #2 spot. Because anything after that is seriously anyone’s guess.

What should the Heat do with their draft pick?

  • They should use the pick to draft a player. (66%, 23 Votes)
  • They should trade down in the draft. (17%, 6 Votes)
  • They should use it to acquire another veteran to round out the team. (17%, 6 Votes)

Total Voters: 35

The Heat have a a few basic options – draft at #2, trade down (trading up is pretty much out of the question), or trade out (which is also very unlikely).

Scenario Possible Result Evaluation
Draft #2 Heat take Michael Beasley. Great! Heat get PF for years to come, instant scoring punch and will provide financial flexibility for several years. Expect this unless Riley gets blown away with an offer.
Draft #2 Heat take someone else (not named Rose, either). Horrible! Why draft someone who is not #2 worthy? You should have traded down and got something for the pick AND the prospect you wanted all along. Its like going to a club in Hialeah at South Beach prices! Nothing but bad memories and a stinging headache.
Trade Down Heat trade #2 pick and Shawn Marion to Clippers for Elton Brand and #7 pick. Intriguing. Heat gain PF all-star caliber to replace Marion and could still net a valued prospect at #7 (Brook Lopez?) Riley did get Brand to sign an offer sheet years back, so the affection is there.
Trade Down Heat trade #2 pick to Memphis for #5 pick and Kyle Lowry. Meh. Get a starting caliber PG, but miss out on possible all-generation talent in Beasley. Still, get a chance to get a valued pick. Heat should get more out of Grizzlies and it should start with Conley, but unlikely.
Trade Down Heat trade #2 pick and Mark Blount to Seattle for Chris Wilcox and #4 pick. Meh. Kind of like drinking a Sex on the Beach – sounds good, but you realized you have had it before. Wilcox and Haslem have similar skill sets (and looks) and whatever PG is left for the Heat at #4 will have to really progress to make Heat fans not lynch the AAA for not taking Beasley, who is great friends with Kevin Durant. Better get Jeff Green involved.

There are still several other scenarios that might play out, some might not require the Heat to trade its #2 pick. The Heat are looking to move the large contract of Mark Blount. With the possibility of trading for Brand or even Carlos Boozer, who remains very serious about coming to Miami after this season, the Heat could be looking to deal Marion more intensely.

And if the Heat are unable to get a PG they like, they could always resort to trading team captain and championship veteran Udonis Haslem. It’s going to be a wild one.

About jonnylons
Self-proclaimed #1 Heat fan. Founded MiamiHeatwave.com back in 2004 when I couldn't follow the Heat living in Tallahassee. Found lots of fellow "Heatians" online and it has never been the same since. Loving this new Heat team with the Triumvirate. Pat Riley has always been, and will now forever be, my idol.
