Shawn Marion Does Not Opt Out

The deadline came and went today at 6pm and Shawn Marion is still under contract. It looks like the Heat will have him on the books for at least this final year of his contract, worth $17.8 million dollars. “We did not opt out,” agent Dan Fegan said.

This is intriguing news for the Heat and for those of us trying to gauge what is next for the team. They have some pretty good assets they could use in a draft day trade – the #2 pick or Marion’s contract. The Heat also could wait until later in the year to trade Marion, if no deal is reached, for an expiring contract like Carlos Boozer (who has expressed strong interest in playing in Miami) or even Elton Brand.

For the Heat, the basic concern with their #2 pick is that they are not sure the Beasley is worth the risk due to some maturity issues. There are many around the league that think the Heat won’t select Beasley with the 2nd pick, too. The Heat are still in search of an answer for point guard and seem to see Marcus Banks as a backup option at this point.

Self-proclaimed #1 Heat fan. Founded MiamiHeatwave.com back in 2004 when I couldn't follow the Heat living in Tallahassee. Found lots of fellow "Heatians" online and it has never been the same since. Loving this new Heat team with the Triumvirate. Pat Riley has always been, and will now forever be, my idol.
