Shawn Marion and Heat Working on Extension
One of the hundreds of things team president Pat Riley is working on is trying to finalize an extension with Shawn Marion. Marion, reportedly, is seeking a three year deal between $13 and $15 million per season while the Heat want the contract to average $10 million a season.
The talks have been ongoing, but the two sides must press to get something done as the deadline for Marion to opt out of his final year (worth $17.8 million) is this Tuesday. If he does opt out, he will be declared a free agent on July 1st and would be free to negotiate with any team, including Miami. The moratorium ends on July 9th at which time free agents are allowed to sign deals.
There is an incentive for Marion to work out a deal with the Heat as he is guaranteed 17.8M right now, and if he opts out, he will be stuck on the open market and possibly won’t get that much money with any team. Miami would like to get a deal worked out for two simple reasons - one, it would give them stability through 2011-2012 with Marion, who would play alongside Wade until his final year of his contract which is 2010-2011 season.
The other reason may be somewhat speculative but it might have merit - if I say so myself. Wade’s last season, 2010-2011, has a player option - much like Marion’s current contract does. How the Heat handle this negotiation may affect that decision. If nothing else, it will serve as a precedent for the Heat and having Marion around at that time might help persuade Wade in coming back to Miami.

[...] As we reported back in June, the Heat are in negotiations with Shawn Marion. The negotiations are 3 years for a contract worth between 13-15 million per season. If the Heat up the ante a bit and give Marion 3 years at $16M, the Clippers might do it because they could risk losing Brand to Golden State with no compensation. They also would get Marion for a shorter term than they would Brand and at about what they were looking to spend on Brand. Marion’s camp would be happy because they gain more money in the long run and they also get a chance to play on a playoff team in LA with Baron Davis. The Clippers could market themselves as a run and gun team, too. [...]
