Psych! Rose Will Work Out for Miami

June 21, 2008 · Filed Under NBA Draft

Umm…what I meant to say was…umm…uh…

Yeah, so the possible Heat career of Derrick Rose would start like this: apologizing for his brash comments about Chicago being the only stop for him, etc.  Listen to BJ Armstrong, Rose’s agent (yes, and former Bulls baby-faced point guard that hung on to Michael Jordan to win championships) ramble on and try to persuade everyone he has this under control:

“Let me make it very clear what’s going on here, so there’s no type of controversy here,” Armstrong said. “This young man, along with Michael Beasley, are both projected in the top two in this draft. And in order for us to have him keep focus on what it is he’s doing, what we did, and we made this very clear with Miami, and are making it very clear now, is that I said the first place we’re going to go, we’re going to work with Chicago. Then, from that point, we will, once we get done with there, then we will talk with Miami.”

Ok? Wow, no wonder Rose himself was “confused” about what is going on.

Sure, we all know that Rose and Beasley are pretty much slated to go one, two. We also understand, right, that there is no way these guys put on personal workouts for other teams. After all, they are practically guranteed the top two spots. What we all probably don’t understand is how Beasley is going to workout for both Chicago and Miami but Rose is basically treating Miami like an after thought.

Step around Armstrong’s convoluted words for a minute and look at the actions. The Heat have scheduled to see OJ Mayo’s workout in Chicago today. That was made known a while ago. Now, all of a sudden, they have a workout for Rose scheduled in Los Angeles. Guess when? Today. Armstrong’s response?

“I have no idea how they’re going to do it.”

Especially when the Heat were in Los Angeles once already to look at some of Armstrong’s other clients.

Of course Rose is going to workout for Miami – but it will be on his own terms. Beasley actually graced the Heat with his presence. In some ways, this makes me not want to pick Rose, but instead by pass him or somehow see him fall a few slots. But who am I kidding, he is going to go #1 overall – which is fine. I still contend he would be a poor fit here in Miami and we would be better served to get Beasley or even trade down and get OJ Mayo, depending on what it would take to convince us to bypass Rose and Beasley, of course.
